1. Check up the homework exercises. Call some students

to read out their compositions about famous scientists.

2. Ask the Ss what they know about Britain. Ask about

the countries, the people, the capital, the languages spoken and so on. Collect the information on the blackboard.

Step II Warming up

Talk about the pictures with the teacher’s help.

T: Look at the pictures on Page 33. Each of them is a picture of the UK. Do you know the names of these pictures? You can discuss the following questions with

your partner.

Qs: 1. Do you know where the pictures are taken?

   2. What does the UK stand for?

   3. What is the UK famous for?

   4. Name five important cities in the UK and Ireland.

Discussion

Sa: I think Picture1 and Picture2 are about the River

Thames.

Sb: I agree. It looks very beautiful. How about the other pictures?

Sc: I think Picture 3 and Picture 4 are about Buckingham

Palace.

Sd: I think so.

T’s help.

T: Well, can I help you? These pictures are all about the UK and Ireland. The River Thames is a very famous river in London .London lies on the River Thames and has a population of seven million. Buckingham Palace is a place where the queen of the UK and Ireland live. In Picture3 we can see the soldiers being on guard in front of the Buckingham Palace.

Discussion

Sa: The letters “UK”stand for “The United Kingdom of

Great Britain and Northern Ireland.” The UK is made up of four countries, which are England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Sb: Yes, you are right. And what is the UK famous for?

Sc: I think the UK is famous for Big Ben, which is a famous clock tower and lies in the Palace of Westminster.

Sd: I think so. Now I’ll tell you five important cities in the UK and Ireland, they are London, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Belfast, Plymouth. London is the capital of the UK. Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland. Cardiff is the capital of Wales. Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland. Plymouth is a city in the west-east of England.

Step III  Give the Ss a map of the UK and Ireland(shown by slide),ask the Ss to match the numbers on the map with the following words:

England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Dublin, Edinburgh, Belfast, Cardiff and London

Sa: No.1 is Scotland.No.2 is Edinburgh.

Sb: No.3 is England. No.4 is London.

Sc: No.5 is Wales. No. 6 is Cardiff.

Sd: No.7 is Northern Ireland. No.8 is Belfast.

Se No.9 is Dublin. No.10.is Republic of Ireland.

T:  Well done. All the answers are right. So much for warming up exercises. Now let’s turn to page 34. Now look at the exercise of speaking.

Step IV Speaking

Get the students to work and discuss in groups of four.

T: OK. It’s time for you to do some oral practice. Now I divide the whole class into six groups, and group1 and 2 talk No.1 at page 34. Group3 and 4 talk No.2 at page 34. Group5 and 6 talk No. 3 at page 34.I give you five minutes to have a discussion. After five minutes, each group will have one or two students tell us your statements. By the way maybe the following sentence patterns are helpful for you:

Don’t you think that...?

I don’t think that’s right...

I don’t think so.

You must be mistaken...

No, you are wrong thinking about...

I’m afraid you’re wrong...?

Aren’t you confusing...?

I’m not so sure about that...

Surely it must be...

Yes, you are right, but...

I believe that you’ve got it right.

Yes, I agree with you.

T OK. Time is up. Are you ready? Who’d like to try to tell us his/her opinion? How about No.1?

Sa: I think English is easy for Chinese people to learn. If we listen to some English programmes and do some readings every day, it is easy for us to improve our listening and speaking abilities. By the way, we should try to speak English as often as possible. If we have time, we can write a dairy or a short passage in English, such as some beautiful sentences, proverbs and so on.

Sb: I don’t agree with you. I think English is very difficult to learn. For example we should remember a lot of new words and expressions. We should remember some grammar. But we have a lot of homework to do, we don’t have enough time to do it. So I think English is the most difficult language to learn for people whose mother tongue is Chinese. But I think if we have a chance to go abroad, it is the best way to learn English. Do you agree?

T: I agree with you two. Well done. Now let’s talk about No.2.

Sc: I don’t agree. I think it is impossible for us students to learn the geography of the UK more easily by going there, the main reason is that we don’t have enough money. I think we can get some information on lines or in the library.

Sd: I don’t agree with you. If we can learn the geography of the UK more easily by going there we shall have more experiences. It is easy for us to get more information.

T: I think so. Now let’s talk about the third question.

Se: The Group of Eight (G8) consists of the eight richest countries in the world, which are America, England, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, Japan, and Russia. Our group thinks that it is easier for small countries to become strong and rich than for large countries; especially island nations have these advantages over other countries. Because the population is small, they don’t need a lot of oil and natural energy. By the way they have the advantage of good location, which is easy for them to import and export.

T: I agree with you. OK, so much for speaking.

StepV  Talking(若时间不足,可改为作业)

Divide the students in groups of five. One of them is a journalist, who is interviewing the other four students about the use of the land, such as agriculture, tourism and protection of the environment.

Sample dialogue:  J=A Journalist  B=Bob White

                D=Danny Rea  C=Charlie Kemp

                P=Peter Smith

J:  Is everybody ready? Then we can begin. Good afternoon, ladies and gentleman. Thank you for your being here today. As you know, we must try to decide what we’re going to do about the plan for the future of the countryside. We all know, in order to make life in the countryside attractive, the government must make sure that people can have enough work, schools, housing, local shops, health care, public transport, clean drinking water, and gas, electricity, telephone and Internet connection. I’d like to hear each of your opinions about the plan. Would you like to start by telling us who you are and what you think of the plan?

B: Thank you. I’m a farmer. My name is Bob White. I agree that the government should make life in the countryside more attractive to stop people from moving away. As we all know, more than 70 percent of the land in the UK is used for agriculture. In the 1960s and 1970s, many people moved away from the countryside to live in the cities. However, in recent years, the population of the countryside has been grown. More and more people want to work and live in the countryside. But I think it would not be good if too many people moved to the countryside. Because large numbers of visitors may endanger the wildlife, landscape and historical siteswhich are valued by both local people and visitors. I think it is necessary for our government to develop the economy of the countryside. Meanwhile we

must pay attention to protecting the environment.

J:  I see. Thank you. Who’s next?

D: I am. My name is Danny Rea. I think there are good

opportunities for people to move from the cities to the countryside. Modern technology such as computers, Internet and fax makes working at a distance possible. So I believe that we can live and work in the countryside more conveniently. However, I think some services in the countryside should be improved, such as health care, public transport, gas, Internet and so on.

J: I agree with you. Thank you very much. Who wants to say something about this plan?

C: My name is Charlie Kemp. I like traveling in the countryside. I like the beautiful scenery and I can always breathe fresh air in the countryside. But I prefer to live and work in the city. In cities modern technology is developed very quickly. With the help of modern technology, our life is very comfortable and convenient. By the way, there are many friends in the cities, so it is easy for me to spend weekends with them happily.

J:  Yes. Thank you. How about the others?

P: My name is Peter Smith. I am a hotel owner. First I should say thanks to our government for having this developing plan for the future of the countryside. Since there are more and more tourists who take their holidays in the countryside, it is much easier for me to make money. So I think tourists may give local people the opportunity to make some extra money. But I think our government should also put emphasis on protecting the landscape. We should always remember to protect our environment.

J: Thanks a lot. Now we have talked a lot about the plan. Thank you very much. Later I’ll write down your ideas and make a report to our government. Thanks again. Good-bye everyone.

Step   Homework

1. Tell the other students why your holiday is the best one, using at least five sentences.

2. Do TALKING. Each one will be asked:“ where you’ll go and what you’ll do.”
