1.3  SPEAKING 根据材料,四人小组合作进行辩论,要求decide which of the four problems is the most serious,然后准备一个角色卡分别向其他组同学讲述why the problem you think is the most serious,锻炼语段表达能力和辩论能力。

Step Revision

The Ss check their writings each other.

Step Preparation

Showing the courseware to the Ss.

T: Look at the pictures on the screen. Each of them is a picture about a problem. What do you see in the pictures?

(the pictures about AIDS patient in hospital, a drug-user, a smoking person and a drinking person)

Sa: In Picture 1, a person who has got AIDS is being treated in hospital.

Sb: In Picture 2, a person is using drugs by injecting.

Sc: In Picture 3, a person is smoking.

Sd: In Picture 4, a person is drinking.

T: All of you are right. And you know AIDS, drugs, smoking, drinking, and so on are serious social problems. And today we will talk about these problems. Please open your books on Page 50.Let’s come to the part——SPEAKING. At first please look at the requirement. Here I have four kinds of role cards. On each role card there is a word AIDS or drugs or smoking or drinking, which stands for one of the four problems listed. You will choose one role card. For example, if you choose a card with AIDS, you think AIDS is the most serious and you must try to find enough proper reasons to prove your view. Of course if you think some other problem is the most serious, you can make your own role card. Are you clear? The teacher can let each group choose one of them freely

Ss: Yes.

Give out the role cards.

T: OK. You have several minutes to prepare. And each should state your reasons why you think the problem is the most serious. When you state, you can use the useful expressions given below on Page 50. OK. Please begin.

Step Speaking

T: OK. It’s time for you to do some oral practice. Each group should choose one student to state your reasons.

Ga: We think drinking is the most serious problem. One reason is that drinking too much is bad for our health. Many diseases are caused by drinking. The second reason is that sometimes drinking may ruin some important meetings, negotiations and so on. And the last one is that drinking can threaten our lives. It is reported that many traffic

accidents are caused by drinking too much. So we think drinking is the most serious one.

Gb: We don’t agree with you. Have you carefully thought about smoking? In our opinion, smoking is the most serious.

Ga: What makes you think that Drinking isn’t the most serious?

Gb: You know, if you want to avoid unhappy events and accidents, you can just drink a little. And it is said that drinking properly can do good to health.

Ga: But could you please explain the reasons why you think smoking is the most serious?

Gb: Medical research shows that smoking is the biggest enemy of lung cancer, because cigarettes contain a lot of nicotine, which can make people ill. Besides, smoking not only does harm to the person who is smoking, but also to people who take in the smoke around him. And it is said that every year smoking persons caused a lot of fires, which lead to many deaths and losses of possesses. So we think it the most serious.

Gc: We don’t think either of you is right. Drinking and smoking are just bad personal habits. If you have a strong will, you can get rid of them. And then you can avoid

troubles. But AIDS is a hidden enemy. If a person doesn’t know he has got AIDS and he offers blood, there will be a lot of people who can be infected. In this way,    many people will suffer this kind of incurable disease. And people can contract AIDS in other ways such as unprotected sex, birth, injection and so on.

Gd: But if we improved our medical condition and treatments, we would find good ways to cure AIDS patients. And people who have got AIDS have normal minds and can make contributions to society for some years. But What about taking drugs? As we know, drugs like cocaine and heroin are disastrous substances. Once people take drugs, they will be addicted to it day by day. Even when they realize that they are wrong, they can’t control themselves. They can do nothing but spend endless money on drugs until they have nothing left. And at last they will end up in terrible and unbearable death. Taking drugs not only can do harm to one’s health and spirit, but the family, even society. So I think it is the most serious social problem.

T:  Very good. I enjoy your debate. Besides these four problems, there are other ones in our society; can you give us other examples?

Ge: We want to say something about gambling. Although it is not among the most serious problems, it does great harm to persons and society. Gambling is the practice

of risking money or possessions on something that is uncertain, such as a horse race, card games, mahjong, and so on. It can bring people excitement by its     unexpectedness, while it can also trap people into chasing the losses and gaining more money. Therefore, gambling will cause many problems if people don’t pay attention.

For example, it may cause fights or stealing if a person suffers a lot of loss when gambling. And very often gambling may break up families or cause other family

problems, such as financial problem. And if a person sits there gambling for a long time, his health will break down. So I think gambling is also a serious problem.

T: Yes, I quite agree with you. So we must also fight against these bad social problems besides the measures our government are taking. Don’t think so?

Ss: yes.

Step   Talking (若时间不足,可改为作业)

Work in groups.

T: Now, there’s a little time left. Let’s come to TALKING on Page124.

Ss are getting ready.

T: Are you ready? Let me check your work. Who’s willing to be the headmaster and host the meeting to decide what to do with the student with HIV?

Sa I want to be the headmaster and host the meeting. OK, everyone. Now let’s have a meeting to discuss whether the students with HIV stay in school or not? And everybody should give us your opinion about this matter and the reasons. Now let’s begin.

Acting as the parent of the student with HIV.

Sb: I think that my son should be allowed to stay in school because even though he is unhealthy in body with HIV, he is in a good state in mind and wants to stay with his

classmates in school. He has such a right. What’s more, most of the time he isn’t a danger to others.

Sa: Can you give us a good reason?

Sb: Of course. As we know, though AIDS is an incurable disease, the AIDS virus cannot be transmitted to others by communicating between people. Therefore it is safe

to stay with people with AIDS.  And I think we should keep it a secret because it is good for my son and others. In this case, others will not look down upon my son and

it cannot cause others’ fear.

Acting as the teacher.

Sc: I agree with this parent. The student should be allowed to stay in school only if we know more about the disease and try to find good ways to prevent it when we are getting on with the student with HIV. I think it is safe to communicate with him. And I also think that we should not tell the other students about this because not everyone knows this disease very well, maybe some of the students will think he is dangerous to them and will keep a certain distance from him, which will make the student feel

self-contemptuous and if everybody knows that it will do great harm to his sick body.

Sa: Others, what are your opinions?

Acting as the parent of another student.

Sd: I think that the student should not be allowed to stay in school because it will cause other students’ fear about this disease. What’s worse, in case something unexpected happens and HIV is contracted to others, what should we do? It’s terrible. And it is unfair to other people.

Sa: Do you think we should keep it a secret? And tell us the reason.

Sd: I don’t agree with the parent and the teacher. I think everybody should have the right to know the truth. If they have to stay with him in school, they should be told how to prevent themselves from getting HIV. If they don’t have a knowledge of AIDS and don’t know how to deal with such a disease, who can ensure that other students will not be infected with AIDS?

Acting as the school doctor.

Se: I am a school doctor. It is not necessary to worry about it. Of course I also think we must tell others because it is a good chance to tell others what the disease AIDS

is like and how to prevent it. But the student should be allowed to stay in school because medical studies show that HIV cannot be transmitted via cups, glasses, toilet

seats, swimming pools, mosquitoes, other insects. HIV spreads through blood and other body liquids, especially by having unprotected sex, or by receiving infected

blood transfusions. It is impossible in school. So I think it is very safe to stay with the student with HIV in school. Besides, we can give the student help and care in order not to make him lonely. This can help cure him and make him live longer.

Sa: Now I have known the different opinions about this matter. I agree with the doctor. You know, he knows more about it than all of us. And I think what he said is reasonable. So I will make the following decision: The student should be allowed to stay in school and we must tell others about it. The meeting is over.

T: I appreciate your meeting. It’s wonderful. And I think the decision is wise. I also agree with it. Thank you forgiving us a very good discussion again.

Step Homework

1. Tell the other students why you think one of the four problems is the best one, using at least four or five sentences.

2. Do the Talking on page 124 in groups. (If in class there is no time to do the talking on page 124)
