II.

How to give first aid when necessary展开讨论,然后在此基础上根据范文写一篇process paragraph, 要求学生正确描述开展急救的步骤并进行交际。

Step I Revision

T: Good morning/afternoon, boys and girls! Please check your homework each other.

The students check each other’s homework.

Step II Warming up

The warming-up exercise makes the students understand there are some kinds of dangers in our daily life such as drowning, trafffic accident, burns, bleeding, cuts and choking. What’s more, the students should be asked to know how to prevent these troubles from happening and how to give first aid when they happen.

Talk about the pictures with the teacher’s help.

T: Look at the pictures on Page 8. Each of them is a picture of an accident. You should know how to prevent these accidents from happening and know what to do when they happen. Now please discuss the following questions with your partner.

Qs: 1. What would you do in the above situations?

   2. What could we do to prevent these accidents?

   3. What do you already know about first aid?

   4. Which new words do you think would be useful when you talk about accidents and first aid?

Discussion:

Sa: To tell you the truth, I would be very afraid and do nothing in the above situations.

Sb: It means you don’t know much about first aid, am I right?

Sa: No. I know nothing about first aid.

Sb: I think we should stay calm at first. We can’t be too frightened or do nothing. Then we should learn something about it.

Sa: In my opinion, it is the most important thing to prevent these accidents from happening.

Sb: I can’t agree with you more. We should try our best to avoid these accidents. We must be very careful when we are swimming, walking, cooking and even in eating. By the way, What new words do you think would be useful when you talk about accidents and first aid?

Sa: The accidents are dangerous, troublesome and frightening. First aid is very useful and necessary.

T’s help

T: Well, can I help you? These pictures are all about the accidents. In Picture 1 you will find a man who is drowned. In Picture 2 you can see a terrible traffic accident. In Picture 3, a house is on fire. In Picture 4, a girl lying on the ground is bleeding. In Picture 5, a man’s hand is cut. In the last picture, a man is choked when he is eating something. These accidents are all terrible. We should try our best to prevent these terrible accidents from happening. For example, when we are swimming, we can’t swim alone. We must swim together with somebody else. Besides, we can’t swim in the river too long. When an accident does happen we should keep calm and know how to deal with it correctly. So learning some first aid is of great importance to each  of us.

Step III Give advice to the persons in trouble.

T: I think you must know something about troubles and first aid. Now please give your advice to the persons in different kinds of troubles.

Ss: Ok.

3 minutes later.

T: Ok. I will check your answers. To the person in a traffic accident, what suggestion will you give him?

Ss: You shouldn’t ride your bicycle without looking at the traffic.

T: What suggestion will you give the victim in burns?

Ss: You ought to be careful when cooking.

T: What suggestion will you give the victim who is bleeding?

Ss: You must go to the nearest hospital as soon as possible.

T: What suggestion will you give the victim whose hand is cut?

Ss: You must never play with the knife in the future.

T: What suggestion will you give the person who is choking?

Ss: You must never eat too fast.

PowerpointPresent the possible answers one by one.

Step IV Speaking

Ask students to act out a dialogue in pairs. One student acts as a mother /father who is going out and the other acts as her/his son/daughter. Because the parent worries about the child’s safety. He/She gives him/her some suggestions or orders. The following structures may be helpful to you.

Sb: No problem, mum. How long will you stay there?

Sa: About two weeks. You must be careful when you are cooking. If a pan of oil catches fire, turn off the gas and cover the pan quickly.

Sb: I know.

Sa: But do you know what number you should dial when an accident happens?

Sb: Mmm. I have no idea.

Sa: You should dial 110 when an accident happens. And, don’t play with electrical equipment. Do you remember?

Sb: I have remembered all of it. Have a nice trip, mum.

Step V Talking (若时间不足,可改为作业)

T: Please turn to Page 131 and we will practise in pairs.

As you know, in China, 120 is the number to call when medical help is needed. Emergency line operators must always stay calm and make sure that they get all the information they need to send help. Work in pairs and use the following role cards below to practise describing accidents and asking for help. Take turns being the eyewitness and the operator.

Give the students three minutes to practise. Three minutes later, check their answers. When students make some mistakes, don’t point them out at once, instead, point them out after they have finished.

Step VI Homework

T: Now let’s recall what we have learned during this course. We have learned how to give each other suggestions. Then we have learned the useful expressions about language difficulties in communication.

Our homework:

1. Preview the part of listening.(Ss listen at home)

2. Remember the useful expressions on Page 59.

3. Recite new words and expressions of this period. (Let the students summarize them)
