II. 教材分析与教材重组

1. 教材分析

本单元以saving the earth 为话题,旨在通过单元教学,使学生了解地球所面临的问题及解决办法。要求学生学会表达和支持个人观点,掌握倒装句,能用所学的与earth有关的词汇去谈论如何理解这些与地球有关的重大问题。通过写作让学生阐述自己对地球上最严重问题的看法。

1.1 WARMING UP 提供了六幅图画让学生去发现并陈述出地球所面临的重大问题——污染,干旱,贫穷,战争等。激发他们热爱地球,保护环境的热情。激励他们努力学习,立志为人类的健康发展作出自己的贡献。

1.2 LISTENING是一篇有关维护地球环境遭破坏的演讲,难度中等。这一环节旨在训练学生从听力材料中获取有效信息,从而进行逻辑推理并能推测出演讲者将说出的内容。

1.3 SPEAKING 借助书中的语言材料,指导学生用所提供的词汇和句式以不同的身份陈述自己的观点,从而提高学生发表见解和运用语言的能力。

1.4 PRE-READINGREADING的热身活动,阅读本文之前,要求学生分组以讨论交流的方式对课文内容进行猜测,猜测分三部分:第一部分为大会的引言;第二部分为大会的内容;第三部分为大会的结论。

1.5 READING这篇欢迎参加地球峰会讲述了我们生存的地球所面临的危机以及解决办法。

1.6 POST-READING第一个题考查学生的归纳总结能力;第二题旨在理解课文的基础上进一步拓宽学生思路;第三题考查学生对文章的把握;第四题训练学生开放性思维,要求学生把课本知识与社会知识联系起来,用英语陈述自己的观点。

1.7 LANGUAGE STUDY分词汇和语法两部分,其中,Word Study是有关本单元重点词汇的练习。Grammar是有关倒装句的任务型巩固练习。

1.8 INTEGRATING SKILLS 中组织学生进行听力练习,引导他们找到其中要点,然后要求他们写下自己的想法,评论及观点。在综合训练这一环节,要培养学生综合运用本单元信息及用英语表达自己的观点陈述自己的见解的能力。

1.9 WRITING 要求学生把所学知识与生活实践相结合,写一篇关于地球所面临的重大问题的文章。

2.1从话题内容和训练目的上分析,WARMIN UP SPEAKING相一致;而从训练目的上分析与相一致。从教材分量来说,可将WARMING UP , SPEAKINGWorkbook 中的TALKING  整合在一起,设计成一节任务型口语课

Step I Revision

The Ss check their writings each other.

T: Good morning/afternoon, everyone! Please check your writings each other first.

Step II Warming up      

Show the pictures on the screen and ask the Ss to answer the questions together.

 

T: Please look at the picture. What can you see?

Ss: We can see an earth with a smiling face.

T: Yes, she used to be happy. But what is our earth like now ? Please look at the next picture.

T: How about this one?

Ss: We can see our earth is sad now.

T: Right. But why is she sad now? Today, we are going to learn something about our earth. After learning, I believe you will find why she is sad and how to make her happy.  

Talk the pictures on Page 65

T: Please look at the pictures on Page 65. Each of them is a picture of problem of the earth. Do you know what they are? You can discuss with your partner.

Discussion

Sa: A river is polluted. It is very dirty. There are no living things in the river.

Sb: Many trees are cut. Without trees, nothing can hold the water. The soil must be brushed away by the floods.

Sc: Columns of black smoke rising from many chimneys, and the air is dark. The air is polluted seriously.

Sd: I can see too much rubbish on the road, which pollutes the forest nearby.

Se: There is a desert in a picture. 

Sf: In the last picture, there are many poor people. I guess they must be very hungry.

T: Very good. Our earth is facing a lot of problems. Which problem do you think is the most serious one? You can discuss the following questions with your partner.

Show the slide.

Qs: 1. What is the biggest problem of the earth? Why do you think so?

2. What causes the problem?

3. What can we do to solve the problem?

4. What do you expect to learn in this unit? How are you going to learn it?

5. How will you check what you have learnt?

6. How will you use what you have learnt?

Discussion

Sa: I think the biggest problem is the water pollution.

Sb: I think it is air pollution.

Sc: Poverty.

Sd: More and more trees are being cut down.(Felling trees excessively.)

Ss: ...

Teacher should walk around the classroom. Help the Ss if necessary.

T:  Very good. Your discussion is very warm. You can have different opinions. But I suggest you say it one by one. And you can discuss in order. Do you agree with me?

Ss: Yes, thank you.

Sb: Just now you said the water pollution is the biggest problem. Why do you think so?

Sa: Because the water is very important to us. If water is polluted, people will not be able to get clean water to drink and get sick. It is very terrible. Besides, many living things may die out because of it.

Sc: What causes the problem?

Sa: I think it is because people pay no attention to our environment. More and more polluted water is piped into rivers, lakes and seas without any treatment.

Sb: What can we do to solve the problems?

Sc: I think our government should take measures to protect our environment. They should check the factories as often as possible to make sure waste water is not poured into rivers, lakes or seas.

Sa: We should pay more attention to environmental protection. If we find Someone harm our environment, we should stop and educate them.

Sd: If they don’t listen to us, we can report it to the government.

Sc: What do you expect to learn in this unit?

Sa: I want to learn how many problems the earth is facing. And the most important thing is how to protect our earth.

Sb: I want to know some background information about the earth.

Sc: How are you going to learn it ?

Sa: I will listen to our teacher carefully and look up some information on internet.

Sb: I plan to investigate some people in the street about saving the earth.

Sc: How will you check what you have learnt?

Sa: We can check what we have learnt each other.

Sb: How will you use what you have learnt?

Sd: I will use what I have learnt to standardize my own behavior and try my best to save our earth.

Sc: I will educate the people who do damage to the environment.

Sa: I want to be an environmentalist in the future so that I can do more things for the environmental protection.

Step III Speaking

Get the students work in groups of five. Discuss whether you should use the coal if you were one of the following roles.

T: We have talked much about pollution. We know that pollution is a very big problem. But why can not we stop the pollution? Why do the businessmen do the business that will cause pollutions? Why does not our government shut down the factories that pollute the environment badly?

Sa: I think the businessmen want to earn money.

Sb: I think the government has its own opinion. Maybe they think the factories are more important than the environment. The development and construction of cities and towns need money. Because the government can get money from the factories, they do not want to shut down the factories.

T: Yes. Different people have different opinions. So sometimes it is very difficult to decide what to do. For example, there is such a situation on our book. Coal is a valuable resource that can be used to produce energy, but it can also cause serious pollution. How should we deal with it? We may have different ideas. So we need to hold a meeting to discuss the problem. Please discuss it in group of five. You should play different roles: a businessman, an environmentalist, a scientist, a local citizen and a local leader. The following expressions are useful for you

T: Look at the slide. The form may help you a lot.

A businessman:

You think that we should burn the coal because...

An environmentalist:

You do not think we should burn the coal because...

A scientist: You think that we should spend more money on science so we can use the coal in a better way, because...

A local citizen: We must burn the coal so that we can get money to develop our area as soon as possible because...

A local leader: You want to do what is best for everybody. Listen to all the speakers. Take notes summarize and help the speakers decide.

5 minutes later.

T: OK, Let’s have a meeting. Any volunteer?

The possible answers

Sa: Now, we’re having a meeting to decide whether we should burn coal. Please tell us your opinions.

Sb: I think we should burn the coal to earn money. We can pay taxes to the government. How can our country develop quickly without money?

Sc: But burning coal causes too much pollution to our environment. It pollutes the air badly. Air pollution can affect our health in many ways. Can money buy health? If nothing is done to stop pollution, we will have no fresh air to breathe and no good environment to live.

Sd: Quite right. I don’t think we should burn the coal. We should spend more money on science to find a better way of using the coal. After having found out the way to burn it without pollution, not only can we burn the coal, but also we can protect our environment.

Se: What you said is right. But if we want to develop our area as soon as possible, we must burn the coal to get  money. If we stop using the coal to wait for you to find a new way, how can we develop our area?

Sa: All that you said are reasonable. I think we can try our best to find a good way to use the coal. Besides, we must ask those factories to take measures to stop the pollution.

Step IV Talking (若时间不足,可改为作业)

T: Now, there is a little time left. Let’s come to Talking on page138 in the Workbook. Imagine that you are taking part in a United Nations youth programme aimed at improving and protecting the environment. You can work in groups and then decide which problem you think is the most important. Use the facts and information on the role cards on page138. In the end, I will check your homework.

A few minutes later.

T: Are you ready, boys and girls?

Ss: Yes.

T: Ok. Who will read out your passage, any volunteer?

Sa: Let me try...

The possible answers

What’s the most serious problem on our earth? In my opinion, it is the poverty. Poverty is a hidden problem. Some people would say that it doesn’t exist. People with money can not see it. But it is really a serious problem.

It is reported that half the world——almost three billion people live on less than two dollars a day. 1.3 billion people live on less than one dollar a day. Less than one percent of what the world spent on weapons was needed to put every child into school by the year 2000 and yet it didn’t happen. Nearly a billion people entered the 21st century unable to read a book or sign their name. In the year 2000, 1.7 million children died as a result of poverty. Almost 800 million people in the world do not have enough to eat. Even some children die of hunger. We all know that around us there are many children who can not go to school because of poverty. Many children have to work to support their poor family when they are very young. It is poverty that brings us much trouble.

Besides, reducing and eliminating poverty is not just limited to the economic field, but related to a political area. It is not just an urgent task facing individual countries, but a shared responsibility for the international community as a whole.

If poverty isn’t got rid of, how can the society advance rapidly? So I think poverty is the most serious problem.

Step V Homework

1. Please interview some people to see whether the coal should be used and write it down.

2. Preview the Listening for the next lesson.
