2,4,6

If you want to get the most out of the study of a language, you must also read for pleasure: novels, plays, travel books, and so on. And in reading books of this kind the important thing is to get on with the reading: to try to grasp what the writer is going to tell you in the book as a whole. This is impossible if you stop and think over the meaning of every single word which happens to be unfamiliar (不熟悉). You can not enjoy a story if you stop half a dozen times on ever page in order to look up words in the dictionary. You may even prevent yourself from understanding the story as a whole by doing this.

When you are reading books of this kind, therefore, you will usually have to rely mainly on (依靠) the context (上下文) to help you. If you meet an unfamiliar word, do not let it take too much of your attention from the main thread (主线) of the story. In all probability (可能) you will meet the same word again a few pages later on in a slightly different context, and each time you see it that your understanding of it will become more exact.

51To read for pleasure means           .

       Ato take pleasure in reading

Bto be satisfied in reading book

Good afternoon, and welcome to England. We hope that your visit here will be a pleasant one. Today, I would like to draw your attention to a few of our laws.

The first one is about drinking. Now, you may not buy alcohol in this country if you are under 18 years of age, nor may your friends buy if for you.

Secondly, noises. Enjoy yourselves by all means, but please don’t make unnecessary noise, particularly at night. We ask you to respect other people who may wish to be quiet.

Thirdly, crossing the road. Be careful. The traffic moves on the left side of the road in this country. Use the crossing for walking and do not take chances when crossing the road.

My next point is about litter. It is against the law to throw away waste material in a public place. When you have something to throw away, please put it in your pocket and take it home, or put in a litter bin.

Finally, as regards smoking, it is against the law to but cigarettes or tobacco if you are under 16 years of age. I’d like to finish by saying that if you require any sort of help or assistance, you should get in touch with your local police station, who will be pleased to help you. Now, are there any questions?

Dear Tom,

It was great to hear from you again. There are many things going on at our school. In fact things have got much better since we stared a different way of learning.

In the past our teachers stood in the front of the class, talking all the time while we listened, and busily took notes. After a tiring day school, we always had a lot of homework to do. Some times we even worked late into the night. Now we are active in class. We often have discussions in pairs or groups. After class we enjoy all kinds of activities, such as going for sports, doing experiments or surfing the Internet.

All the best.
